Minke Mazzocato - A Bio.
In the 80’s and 90’s, Minke studied Visual Arts at the University College of the Fraser Valley and The School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. Minke also studied English Literature, Creative Writing, Adult Literacy Education and Secondary Level Fine Arts Education. In her post graduate work in 2001 - 2003, while teaching in the Surrey School District, she explored the value of Arts in Education for kids at risk with diverse and complex developmental learning needs.
Presently, living and working in her studio in White Rock, she is grateful at this age and stage in her life for an opportunity to focus on developing a visual art practice that communicates a deeply personal experience of the sweet Mystery of God’s Grace and Goodness in her moment to moment, day to day life in her new surroundings with her husband Livio.
Artist’s Statement:
Minke’s thoughts on Drawing from life – Interpreting the Human Form.
An appreciation for drawing the draped or undraped model developed in my college days. Mirko Jackabow, my painting and printmaking instructor assured our Life Drawing Group there is no better way to develop one’s seeing/drawing skills than in the struggle to understand articulation in the human form in a series of timed poses in regular life drawing events.
Timed poses insist I make the wrong lines until my eye finally gets it and my hand makes the right ones; timed poses insist I allow all mark making to stand as integral elements of the finished art work – a kind of musical, Zen and the Art of Seeing Life Drawing Practice.
My struggle to explore, interpret and re-present each pose in this spirited way, fills me with awe for the re-creative process and for the Grace and Intelligence inherent in each human life with all it's complexities and diversities. This re-creative struggle also floods me with a profound appreciation for the unique richness of story and meaning expressed in every human gesture.
